Day 9 Poetry


Do Now: Please take out your discussion question on "The Fish." Locate a word, phrase, or line in the poem that would help you to think about the question or make an inference.

Today's Learning Target: 
I will be able to define conceit and apply the definition to poems we read in class.
I will know that I have hit the learning target when...
-I can explain what a conceit is in my own words.
-I can read and annotate poems that are conceits and explain what their extended metaphors are and how the comparison sheds new light on the subject.

Agenda:

  1. Student-led discussion
  2. Thesis statement practice
  3. Exit Ticket: How did the class discussion give you a new perspective or greater appreciation for the poem?
HW: read and annotate "Kitchenette Building." Include your thoughts on who the speaker is, what the situation is, and what poetry devices you notice. Also, write at least one discussion question that you can share with the class.
