Day 7 Poetry

Do Now: How does a poem's structure (i.e., the way the poem looks on the page, the number of stanzas, the way the poet breaks up the lines, etc.) help the reader gain insight into its subject matter?

Today's Learning Target:
I will be able to observe how thinking about a poem's structure can contribute to a better understanding of its subject.
I will know that I have hit the learning target when...
-I can talk about how poems are structured in different ways and what these choices emphasize.
-I can write a poem that imitates the structure and content of one of the poems we read in today's class.

Agenda:

  1. Sharing our ideas: "Metaphors"
  2. Poetry as metaphor
  3. "This is Just to Say" and imitation
HW: finish your imitation poem on "Metaphors" (instructions in our shared folder!) and write three sentences explaining what you learned about why a poem's structure is important from the exercise.
