Day 6 Poetry

A Greek amphora depicting Oedipus and the Sphinx
Do Now: Why do poets use figurative language (i.e., metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, etc.) in their work?

Today's Learning Target:
I will be able to define figurative language and explain how and why poets use it.
I will know that I have hit the learning target when...
-I can explain in my own words what figurative language or figures of speech are.
-I can make a claim about why poets use figurative language in general, and why Marge Piercy uses figurative language in her poem "To Be of Use."

Agenda:

  1. Sharing our ideas: "The Mosquito"
  2. Figurative language and "To Be of Use"
  3. Exit ticket: how is the speaker different from the poet? How can we determine who the speaker is?
HW: read and annotate Sylvia Plath's "Metaphors." Write down at least three questions/observations.
