Day 4 Poetry

Do Now: Please open up the Whitman poem and article. Talk to a neighbor about the words you looked up and the response you wrote. While you're sharing ideas, I will check your work. 

Today's Learning Target: 
I will be able to recognize "special effects" or literary devices that poets use to make their work more memorable.
I will know that I have hit the learning target when...
-I can describe the language we can use to have a meaningful discussion about poetry.
-I can locate at least two literary devices in our poem of the day and explain how they make the poem more memorable.

Agenda:

  1. Special Effects
  2. "Digging"
  3. Exit ticket: how is the speaker different from the poet? How can we determine who the speaker is?
HW: read and annotate John Updike's "The Mosquito," and label at least three examples of poetry terms he uses in the piece
